We look at the significance of the beginning of Jesus ministry, his baptism, and what happened as the Spirit descended on him. All four of the Gospels record the baptism of Jesus, each providing unique insights into these first moments of his messianic ministry. It was not a baptism for the repentance of sins, but the moment the Spirit empowered Jesus for his ministry. Later Peter reflects that the Spirit was what gave Jesus his abilities and gifts. The power Jesus received change the course of human history and we are still following through with the implications these beginnings. Baptists have practiced baptism for centuries. We examine some of the ideas that lead this central part of our faith.
