Just before Jesus enters into Jerusalem, on what we call Palm Sunday, two stories set the stage for what will happen in the coming week. The resurrection of Lazarus and the anointing of Jesus by Lazarus’ sister Mary. What Mary does challenges every fiber of our soul. It is outrageous and uncomfortable. Yet what she does shows her great love for Jesus. She has to step outside both her comfort zone and her culture’s comfort zone. As Jesus is eating, we witness the conspiracy to kill him growing behind the scenes. At the height of HIS popularity, Jesus rides into Jerusalem. Everyone watching would have understood the symbolism of this moment. Only kings entered Jerusalem this way. The people were ready to declare him king, but things quickly turned, and Jesus ends up crucified. It raises the question of whether Jesus is a king or a troublemaker?
