In the story of the woman who anoints Jesus, we find parallels with the contemporary church. Should the focus be on sins or forgiveness? Sometimes throughout the church’s history the emphasis has be on labeling someone a sinner and keeping them from participating in the life of a community. Many have had to leave a community because of their “sin”. Jesus brings forgiveness to any who want it, or understand that HE can forgive their sins. Many, however, either didn’t see their sinfulness or didn’t want HIS forgiveness. Many have commented to me through the years, that the church is just a place where they are “condemned” and want no part of it. If the emphasis from Jesus was forgiveness why are we still so focused on sinfulness. Forgiveness is harder to give, but when given creates a NEW beginning and freedom for both the one forgiving and the one receiving forgiveness.
