heavenly-handsDavid is the shepherd boy who unexpectedly became king.  Kings and shepherds share the task of leading others—people or sheep.  Prophets were not popular figures, because they usually show up to tell someone what God wants them to do.  Often God’s direction can seem to be the opposite of what those hearing the prophet had in mind.  Mark shows us the great demand for Jesus’ healing touch.  The people who brought their sick and dying to be near Jesus (and the apostles) were trying to meet their immediate needs.  The apostles probably felt overwhelmed by the needs pre-sented.  Today we have the presence of the Holy Spirit to renew our lagging energy when we are faced with overwhelming situa-tions.  What we cannot do with our own strength opens the door to letting the Spirit direct and guide us.  -Rev.
