jesuswithdevilThese two passages from the Gospel of Luke, Luke 4:1-13; Luke 4:14-21, explore Jesus’ actions following his baptism. In the wilderness he confronts the temptations offered to him. Rather than accept what Satan offers, he turns to the Word of God and tells Satan to take a hike. In his home town, Jesus publicly proclaims why he has come into the world. The people of the synagogue, who have known him since childhood, perhaps remember him as a bit odd. Jesus is the carpenter’s son who used to run and play with the children of the town. Now he reads from the scripture and proclaims that he has come to fulfill the prophecy from Isaiah. What would you have thought if you had been there? -Jan Parke
