Jesus’ ministry begins with a great display of his authority and the power. His power is displayed in a number of miracles. Eventually, his miracles reveal that HE has authority over everything. Do we believe this anymore? Do we want Jesus to have authority over everything? The miracles Jesus performs leave him exhausted, and he withdraws for a time of solitude to pray. The writers of Mark note this, but it raises the question: “Why did Jesus withdraw to be alone?” There is difference between being lonely, being alone, and choosing solitude. The first troubles millions, the second is common and usually temporary, and the third is filled with healing. Solitude is necessary for our spiritual health, strength and journey.
