The question of authority permeates history. Who has the authority to direct, set the agendas, make decisions, decide the direction you or your community will take? Authorities compete for your money, support, and votes, but mostly for your loyalty. They want you to follow them. For centuries different authorities have fought, gone to war, and imposed their will on others. The question of authority runs throughout the gospels. The question being asked by the religious authorities is whether Jesus has the authority to direct the changes HE wants. Even as they see him exercising authority visibly, few follow HIM and even fewer acknowledge HIS authority. We are still pulled in all directions by different authorities. What can we learn from those who questioned Jesus’ authority?
